Summer is the perfect time to hit the course and enjoy a round of golf. However, playing golf in hot weather can be challenging. To help you stay cool, comfortable, and safe, here are our top tips for everything you need to enjoy a full summer of golf.

1. Protect Yourself from the sun

The importance of sun cream is widely known, but it can be easy to forget – especially if the day starts a bit cloudy. Make sure you apply sun cream at the start of the day and remember to reapply throughout when needed – more often if you’re sweating.

A golf visor or cap is essential for protecting your face from harmful UV rays as well as making it easier to see the course in bright light. A wide-brimmed hat offers even more protection, shielding your face, ears, and neck.

Invest in a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, but they also help reduce glare, making it easier to follow your ball while playing.

2. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is vital – not just when playing golf! It is especially important in hot weather to maintain your energy levels and performance. Drink water frequently throughout your round. Water is perfect for keeping you hydrated, while sports drinks can also help replenish electrolytes. Caffeinated or sugary drinks should be avoided where possible as large quantities can cause dehydration.

3. Seek Shade

Whenever you have a chance, rest in the shade. Whether it’s under a tree or in a shaded area near the clubhouse, these breaks will help you cool down and avoid overheating.

A golf umbrella isn’t just for rain; it can be a great source of shade, keeping you out of the sun while you walk between shots or wait your turn.

4. Lighten Your Load

Save your energy by using a trolly or golf buggy instead of carrying a heavy golf bag. This can significantly reduce your physical exertion and keep you cooler during your round during the summer months.

Only carry the clubs and equipment you need. A lighter bag is easier to manage and keeps you from carrying excess weight, which will make it more challenging in hot weather.

5. Dress for the Weather

Wear lightweight, breathable fabrics like moisture-wicking polos, shorts, skorts, or skirts. These materials help keep sweat away from your body and allow for better air circulation, keeping you cool.

Spikeless golf shoes are generally lighter and more comfortable in hot weather. They also provide adequate traction without the added weight and rigidity of traditional spikes.

6. Keeping Cool

Removing your glove between shots, allows your hand to cool down and prevents excessive sweating, which can lead to discomfort and poor grip.

A cold, wet towel around your neck will help provide immediate relief from the heat.

7. Rest When Needed

Listen to your body and take breaks as needed. Overexertion in hot weather can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, so it’s crucial to rest if you start feeling fatigued.

8. Plan Your Round

Avoid the hottest parts of the day by scheduling your tee time early in the morning or late in the afternoon. This not only helps you avoid peak temperatures but also often means the course is less crowded.

9. Maintain Energy Levels

Keep your energy up by eating small, light, but high-calorie snacks throughout your round. Fresh fruits, nuts, and energy bars are great options. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that can make you feel sluggish in the heat.

By following these tips, you can enjoy a comfortable and successful round of golf, even on the hottest summer days. Remember, preparation is key to staying cool and performing your best.
